日本FLASHBACK - An Encounter with a "Go Steady" Guy

Nihon Flashback are moments when I feel like discussing the time I spent in Japan. Although it's been about 3 years since I've lived there  a lot of memories still stick with me--not to mention the 5 diaries I brought back with me. As a single girl in Japan I spent quite a bit of time out and about in Japan. So here's my first flashback.

Picture it: Tokyo. Ageha Night Club. Halloween 2005.
I was on my way to Ageha a fairly large club out in Tokyo. It was Halloween night. My two closests friends in were busy and couldn't hand out with me. Not one to sit home and act all lonely I decided to spend Halloween night at Ageha.

Ageha is a club that's generally packed with foreigners and Japanese people. It's a pretty expensive club, about $40 to get in. The club was huge and also know to bring in Japanese and Foreign entertainers and DJs. That night it was especially packed because it was Halloween. And I didn't have a costume or a free pass so I had to wait in line for about a 35 minutes before I step into the doors.

The club is packed. I immediately head out to the tent which is where the hip-hop was being played. That night was pretty cool because there were a few Japanese rappers there like GI-CODE. I also got to see JiN (a Korean-born Japanese singer, not the Chinese-American rapper) and the R&B group Full of Harmony. I didn't know there were be performers so I was pretty excited about seeing them.

Depsite the packed area I was one of the few black girls in the place. And being a solo black girl who likes to shake her ass, I recieved a bit of attention. At one point I found myself in a mini dance battle with a black guy in a dinosaur costume and two J-guys. Of course things were pretty amicable.

My dancing also got the attention of a guy. I was a bit surprised but this. Usually I got attention from thugabees. This guy looked me like the "host club" guys. See example below:

He was a good-looking guy and spoke a little English. So when I get out of the circle he pulls me aside and tells me how cute I am. The guy is cute enough so I get my flirt on, breaking out with a mix of Japanese and English. He tells me his name is Ayame and that he's ever talked to a foreign girl before. I raised my eyebrows at this given the fact that Ageha is pretty foreign heavy. But I give him the benefit of the doubt. The more we talk the more he tries to find ways to touch me. My hands, my back, and neck, he's trying to get in a feel here and there. I'm a bit subtle about taking a hold of his hands and keeping them in his area. I wasn't as bothered by his hand as I should have been which I'm totally blaming on the fact that I'm often a horny person, and he was cute. But he starts to take the hint. We continue to talk anyway in a mix of English and Japanese.

I also notice that it's getting pretty late (or pretty early...many clubs in Japan are open until the wee hours in the morning to accommodate people waiting for the trains to start running again).  Ayame and I exchange phone numbers and I tell him I'm heading home. He offers to walk with me as he was leaving as well. I don't think too much about this since a lot of people are leaving out. There aren't many trains that go into that area, so it wouldn't have shocked me if we ended up on the same train.

So we make it to the train back to the main area of Tokyo. The train car has a few drunken people slumped over on the seats. Suddenly Ayame says he wants to "go steady" with me. I did a double take. In my head I'm like, "WTF, we just met?" I thought it was odd because he said this to me in English, not Japanese. And Unless it's an anime or TV drama, I was pretty sure it wasn't common for J-guys to ask women to go steady with them after having like ten minutes of talking.

I tell Ayame that he's nice but we should know a bit more about each other first. He continues on telling me he'd be so excited to date a foreign girl and mentions his stop is coming up.

Then he invites me to his place.

Oh, now I get it. He was really just looking for a bit of foreign girl ass to tap.

The funny things is, I'm actually not opposed to one nighters. I'd have my fair share in Japan already, so it wasn't that big of a deal to me. And like I said, I was definitely attracted to this guy. But damn, can we at least have dinner first or something!? I find myself on my guard and sweetly tell him I have to get home. Ayame didn't press the issue and change the topic to asking me about my experiences in Japan. I'm cautious with my answers wondering to know if he was really okay with me not going home with him.

We reach his stop. Ayame says he'll send me a text. Before he gets off the seat, he kisses me squarely on the lips.

There are two things going through my head.

First is: Woohoo kiss from a really hot guy!
Second is: Ew! WTF dude I don't even know you!

Unfortunately I have such a delayed reaction that I barely notice him leaving the train. I'm a bit dazed by the time I make the 1.5 hour trip home. Not because it was a creamy kiss or whatever, but I was genuinely surprised. Again this is some anime shit here. In retrospect, I shouldn't have been so surprised since he was touching on my most of the night, though on the walk back to the train and on the ride itself he didn't touch me at all.

A week later I get a text from Ayame. Again he gives me the "I've never gone steady with a foreign girl. Come to my place" lines. Ugh, I wasn't that big of a sucker. I tell him I'm not interested in going to his place but if he wants to me as friends out in the open like at a cafe or something I'm fine with that. He doesn't reply back again. I just shrug and delete his text and name from my phone.

So that was my first flashback. There will be more along the way probably a bit out of order. I had a lot of wacky adventures while I was there and not always related to dating. So I'll get through them as best as I can!
